Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee has declared May, 11 a public holiday.
This was announced on Monday via a press release from the Home Affairs Ministry.
The Ministry said that “in pursuance of the powers conferred on the Hon. Minister of Home Affairs by Section 6 of the Public Holiday Act, the Minister has declared Monday, May 11, 2015 as a Public Holiday in observance of General and Regional Elections.”
After he prorogued the National Assembly on November, 10 last year to avoid an Alliance For Change sponsored No Confidence Motion, President Donald Ramotar was placed in a position where he had to set a date for elections.
After months of “consultations,” he, in January, announced May 11 to be the date of one of Guyana’s most historic elections.
As elections swiftly approach, the competition seems to be between the People’s Progressive Party/Civic and the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) coalition even though there are at least five other political parties.
Various sections of society have called on all Guyanese to play their individual and collective roles in ensuring that this year’s elections are peaceful. These calls were echoed by APNU+AFC, PPP/C as well as GECOM.
GECOM yesterday issued a statement to the effect that it is fully committed to free and fair elections.
