Courtland, led by the experienced John Percival defeated surprise finailists Yakusari of
Black Bush Polder by 8 wickets to emerge champions of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Silver Jubilee Ansa McAl sponsored 5-over cricket tournament.
The venue was the Area ‘H’ ground in Rose Hall Town on Friday last where a large and colorful crowd enjoyed the action which followed closely on the heels of the successful Busta Champion of Champions Tournament.
Yakusari were restricted to 19 for 1 off their four allotted overs due to tight bowling from Keon Sinclair, Troy Mathieson, John Percival and L. Thomas. Dwayne Watson top scored with 10. In reply, Courtland lost Troy Mathieson and Micheal Felix to be 2 for 2 in the first over bowled by Watson.
However, Keon Sinclair 10 not out and Eon Gibson 03 not out held their nerves to guide Courtland to 20 for 2 off three overs. Courtland had earlier drew the bye to the final while Yakusari, who played all their matches with passion and unity defeated Tamarind Root by eight wickets in the lone semi-final.
Tamarind Root reached 44 for 8 off 5 overs with only D. Mangal 17 and K. Rangasammy 11 reaching double figures. C. Iyana took 2 for 6 off his one over. Dwayne Watson was dismissed for 0 off the first ball bowled by Micheal Ramdyall but steady batting from R. Lallu 21 not out and R. Iyana 12 not out saw Yakusari to 45 for 2 off 4.5 overs.
In the first round of four overs each, Courtland defeated Whim by seven wickets; Rose Hall Town ‘B’ surprised Susannah/No. 19 by eight runs. Yakusari created a huge upset by getting past one of the tournament’s favourite, Albion by 8 wickets based on Dwayne Batson cameo innings of 30 off 12 balls.
Fyrish batted brilliantly to get past Tain Block 4 by seven wickets, Tamarind Root defeated Young Warriors by 10 runs while Rose Hall Town ‘A’ squeezed past Chesney by 9 wickets with one ball to spare.
Second round matches were witnessed by a packed Area ‘H’ ground with all three pavilions filled to capacity.
Fyrish were restricted to 29 for six off five overs and in reply Yakusari reached 31 for 4 from 4.3 overs to win by six wickets. Tamarind Root defeated Rose Hall Town ‘B’ by seven wickets, restricting them to 24 for 7 off five overs. Tamarind Root then took 4.3 overs to reach 25 for 3.
In the final round two match Courtland created the biggest upset of the day when they got passed Rose Hall Town ‘A’.
Batting first, Rose Hall Town found themselves in trouble at 10 for 3 in the 2nd over after Delbert Hicks, Khemraj Mahadeo and Akshay Homraj were dismissed for one run each. Renwick Batson 19 and Mark Papannah 15 batted well to take the home team to 50 for 4 from 5 five overs. In reply, Courtland lost L. Thomas, bowled by Sherain Murray to be 1 for 1 but recovered well led by Micheal Felix’ 25 not out and Troy Mathieson 20.
Courtland carried home the winning prize of $70,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy while Yakusari received $30,000 and a trophy. Third place Tamarind Root received $20,000 and a trophy while Sinclair collected the man-of-the-finals trophy and a special prize. RHTY&SC Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony said the tournament was a great success and stated that three more tournaments of a similar nature would be organized as part of their Cricket Development Programme.
The club he stated is quite passionate about the development of the game noting thehat they are the leading entity in Guyana in this regard. He expressed gratitude to the Management of Ansa McAl for sponsoring the Silver Jubilee 5-over tourney.
