Following an 8 month layoff from the ring, Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore is set to resume his
professional career when he matches gloves with Puerto Rican, Manuel Gonzalez, for the Latin Bantamweight title on May 30 at the B B Scott Sports Auditorium, Philipsburg, St. Maarten.
This much was relayed to Kaieteur Sport by the Guyanese multiple champion moments after he had completed a hectic workout at the Gleasons Gym, Front Street Brooklyn, yesterday afternoon.
Gonzalez is from the Dominican Republic and sports an attractive record of 19W (5KO) – 8L (2KO) – 2D. The boxers also signed an agreement that after winning this title should there be a call for a rematch or the first title defense, the promoter reserve the rights to first option for that promotion.
Should he win this fight Moore will add the above accolade to several others he had compiled earlier including the Guyana and Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) Bantamweight titles, NABA Fedelatin and Pan Asian Featherweight title, WAA/WBC Super/Bantamweight and the Continental of America Bantamweight crowns.
With a 31 (25 KO) 3 record, Moore last fought in September last year when he overpowered countryman, Mark Murray to win their Bantamweight encounter inside 2 rounds. One fight earlier, in the Resorts World Casino, Queen’s NY, he lost to Rafael Vasquez in the 9th of a 12 round Bantamweight affair for the Fedelatin Bantamweight title.
Nevertheless, Moore still sports a commendable knockout ratio of 73.53% and is still confident that he could eventually clinch that coveted world title once he perseveres. He said that his workouts are stiff and he is quite focused on the task at hand.
During our discourse, former boxing superstar, Darius Forde, who assists Moore in his training sessions chimed in to commend Moore’s work ethic. Forde, a regular feature at the Gleasons Gym where he conducts training sessions as well as performs administrative work, said that Moore is a disciplined fighter. He said that once he stays on track, Moore is destined for glory.
Moore commenced his professional career in August 2001 with a stunning first round KO over countryman Hewley Robinson.
