Police appear to have narrowly thwarted a prison breakout at the Grove/Diamond Police Station.
An official confirmed that the prisoners punched a large hole in the northern wall of the station sometime yesterday morning. The hole was made in an area where prisoners are taken to have their baths.
Police believe that a part of the escape attempt occurred when police ranks took the inmates to this area. A source said that investigators have been unable to identify the ringleaders. Police sources could not say what implements were used to punch the hole in the station wall.
Several prisoners are being held at the station, including three suspects in a recent armed robbery. Some of the inmates have been there for over 24 hours. The Brickdam Police Station lockups are at present being extended and no inmates are being held there.
In May, 2014, two prisoners escaped from the Providence Police Station lockups. That incident followed the May 19, 2014 escape of four remanded prisoners from a holding cell at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
