In his first game as Captain of the Golden Jaguars, midfielder Dwayne Jacobs has expressed the view that his charges did well collectively.
Guyana lost the game to host Suriname on Thursday evening last at the Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo, 0-1 and did well to limit the final score line after playing with a man short from the 12th minute.
Despite being short, the home based Guyanese team created numerous chances but lacked the finishing touch even Jacobs was culpable. He noted that the red card resulted in the players having to work extra hard.
“We could have seen a lot of good points in the game as well as some weak points but all in all I find it was a good performance from the group, we just need to work a little harder and execute the Coaches plan.”
With the Round 2 of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying home and away series set to kick off early next month and Guyana playing away first to St. Vincent & the Grenadines on June 10 with the return game four days later here at the Providence Stadium, Jacobs believes that the overseas based players will add depth and strength to the Guyana side.
“Along with the foreign based players coming in we will get a stronger unit. Coach Shabazz and his Technical team were able to assess the players in this game and would know who is ready for the next level going forward to make the final squad for the World Cup Qualifiers.”
Shabazz, speaking after the game had said that he was satisfied that the team had given a total effort in order to get a result acknowledging that it was always going to be difficult playing with 10 from such an early point in the game.
“I thought we held them off well with ten players and in the last 10 minutes we looked the fitter team.”
The Guyana based players Shabazz informed will train two to three days per week in order to keep a high level of fitness while by mid this month, all forces would be pulled together ahead of final preparations for the qualifiers.
