Tomorrow will mark the culmination of the inaugural Busta Soft Shoe Football Competition, a new and creative format organized by the Petra Organisation played on turf without the traditional football boots (pegs).
The final which will be held at the GFC ground brings together pre-tournament favourites Sparta Boss and West Front Road ‘Gold is Money’ in what is already being billed as a grudge match between two teams that thrive on the non-traditional format of the sport.
The tournament, though in its infancy stage, has grown in popularity in the couple of weeks of its birth and both the organizers and corporate sponsors must be pleased with the support offered by the fans in such a short space of time.
There is no doubt that the two principals involved Troy Mendonca and Marlan Cole of the Petra Organisation have moved into a realm of innovation that is second to none both in terms of assisting in the development of the sport of football and at the same time providing the kind of creativity and camaraderie among communities that undoubtedly has helped sustain the interest and support for the game.
The two teams that will be contesting the final are amongst the best in the small goal arrangement as attested by their consistent positive results in nearly every competition contested.
These two teams possess some of the best exponents of the art of this format that requires a certain level of skill on a vastly reduced measurement to the field.
However, what has made the format a best seller as evidenced by the success of its sister competition the Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ which is played on a hard-court is the rivalry that is resultant between the various communities, a phenomenon that has caught the eye of the corporate community, that now sees it as a good reason to offer its support.
The design has been able to whip up a frenzy among participating teams and fans that makes supporting it almost compulsory.
The Guyana Beverages Inc must be applauded for investing such a huge sum of money in an event that was being seen for the first time in Guyana, going ahead without practical evidence of its success.
However, judging from the growing support the tournament has started to enjoy, especially beginning from the latter stages of the preliminary rounds and then the knockout phase, the sponsors must be satisfied with the support received so far.
The early prognosis seems to indicate that just like the Guinness ‘Greatest of de Streets’ Competition, the Busta Soft Shoe Tournament is on its way to becoming a similar staple for football fans, especially from a community-based perspective.
The Platinum sponsor has promised to take the competition to other communities around the country that offer support to its products and this move must be commended, especially for the above stated reasons.
It is here to stay and fans are being urged to come out in their numbers to support their respective community teams vying for top honours and bragging rights tomorrow.
