-Welch drops 41 points
By Edison Jefford
What started as a competitive encounter among undoubtedly Linden’s leading
schools basketball teams in the annual Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Basketball Finals, ended up being a lopsided victory for Linden’s Technical Institute (LTI).
National junior and senior basketball player, forward, Terron Welch, who will tour Suriname this weekend as part of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) development programme ahead of the Caribbean Championships in June, was part of an offensive massacre which wrested the 2015 title from Mackenzie High School (MHS).
Welch displayed why he maybe the youngest player on the senior national team when he poured in 41 points to help LTI thrash Mackenzie High 84-34 Wednesday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court in Linden. Guard, Dennis Niles had 21 points, while Tahquille Johnson finished with 12 points also for the Technical Institute.
The fact that none of Mackenzie High Schools usual offensive players managed to score double figures speaks of the mammoth meltdown they endured. Kerlon Cadogan had eight points while Revon Bradford and Lennox Henry finished with six points apiece.
Mackenzie High just could not convert on possession. Heightened turnovers added to their melee to remain competitive, which never occurred. As such, the mostly student-supporters were given the Terron Welch Show, which was impressive to watch.
Though low-scoring, the third place game provided more of a competition Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School (CWSS) edging New Silver City Secondary 40-36 as Daniel Lee put in 12 and Akinni Wilson 10 points. Donovan Paddy scored 12 points for New Silver City.
Welch was adjudged Scoring Champion and Most Valuable Player of the final for his individual performance that also included nine rebounds and 10 steals. Welch also collected a ‘Most Assist’ in the Final prize.
The other scoring champions were Tyrese Mitchell, who was second; Wilson, who finished third and Paddy fourth. Niles collected the ‘Most Rebounds’ in the Final prize while Audley Inniss got the ‘Most Block Shots’ award with 14 blocks. Bradford was Runner-Up MVP while CWSS took home the ‘Most Disciplined School’ trophy. CWSS Malcolm James was adjudged ‘Coach of the Tournament’.
