Three Prison Wardens have been handed over to the police following the discovery of a number of contraband items which they were planning to smuggle into the Georgetown Prison.
The Wardens were held with the items on Tuesday night after random searches were carried out on their persons by their superiors.
Among the items found were narcotics, cigarettes and fronto, (raw tobacco used to smoke marijuana).
At the time of the search, the ranks were reporting for duty.
“They were being briefed and then we decided to do a random search,” a source at the Georgetown prison told this newspaper.
Within recent times, quite a few prison staffers have been placed before the court for attempting to smuggle contraband items into the main penal facilities.
Director of Prisons Welton Trotz, told Kaieteur News that although authorities have put arrangements in place to address the problem, there will always be some openings that are created by prison employees themselves and relatives of prisoners.
“We do random checks on our officers and inmates are checked daily,” the Director explained.
Smugglers have been using ingenuous methods to beat the system, including stashing the contraband in food stuff as well as strapping it to their bodies. This is in addition to the age old method of throwing it over the prison walls.
Studies have shown that most of the illegal items that find themselves behind prison walls are smuggled in by prison officials themselves, while a small percentage enter the institution through prisoners with collusion from wardens.
Several searches have unearthed a number of illegal items, including cellular phones and weapons, both original and makeshift.
And Director Trotz has vowed to ensure that the lid is tightly placed on smuggling and other criminal activities within the prison system.
“This Director will not just sit down and allow the image of the prison to be tarnished. I don’t want to be a part of this. I prefer to go home than be a part of criminality within the system,” he declared.
The three Prison Wardens are expected to appear in court sometime today.
