Marriott Hotel has announced their sponsorship for an Athletics Meet to be held on November 14 in Santa Mission at a simple ceremony held yesterday at their location in Kingston, Georgetown.
The event which contains a Marathon, Half Marathon and a 10K, will be the first of its kind in the area. According to chief organizer Leslie Black the main aim of the event to boost tourism. He stated that the meet will attract athletes from around the world and 50 competitors have already registered including those from Kenya, United States of America and Canada. Black indicated that 1000 athletes have also signaled their indication to take part.
Marriott Director of Marketing, Denisse Olivo said they are happy to be the premier sponsor of the event adding that they will host a fund raising dinner on November 13. She added that the proceeds from the races will go towards the children education in the area.
Peace Corp volunteer Kelly Reeves of the USA who is one of the organizers said the response from the community is encouraging. She stated that this undertaking will give people a chance to see the hinterland community of Guyana and Amerindian Culture.
Reeves, who is also and athlete and is based in Santa Mission, pointed out that it will help to promote the sport in the area since there is lots of natural talent there.
Black expressed gratitude to Marriott. The marathon will commence at 08:00 hrs which will be followed by the half marathon at 09:00 hrs and the 10k at 10:00 hrs. Among the local athletes that will be on show are Kelvin Johnson, Alika Morgan and Cleveland Forde.
