Like the mothers of the three children Jaden Mars, Akeela Benons and Kevon Critchlow, who
died due to the alleged negligence of the health sector, Teresa Lalltoo, the woman who gave birth to a stillborn baby girl last Monday is now seeking justice for the loss of what would have been her second child.
The woman’s family has been on some run around to get answers and justice for their relative, who is now struggling to recover from her trauma.
The woman claims to have suffered due to the ordeal which altogether could have been avoided, had it not been for bad medical practice and irresponsible calls by both doctors and nurses.
Dave Lalltoo, the woman’s brother, said that yesterday he along with a close family friend went to the office of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Shamdeo Persaud, but was greeted by the CMO’s Secretary.
He said that he related his sister’s incident to the very understanding Secretary who then made calls to the Matron of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) and to the Administrator of the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) to make enquiries into his claims. She was unaware of the incident but she was unsuccessful in obtaining any information.
She then informed him that neither of the hospitals sent a report of the matter, and advised that an investigation is not possible without the reports which should have been made within 24 hours of the occurrence.
He said that he ventured over to the WDRH to meet with the Administrator. He said that the Administrator was quite reluctant to speak with him, but eventually he did with much scorn and pretense of not being aware of the situation.
The man has opined that the WDRH is trying to turn the attention away from the institute as they attempt to evade being culpable by pretending not to “know anything.”
He said that something that has raised some questions in his mind is that the referral letter from the WDRH to GPHC stated that the foetus’ heart rate was 160, and that the death certificate issued by the GPHC stated that the baby died at the WDRH. “Nobody wants to be blamed; WDRH don’t want to take the blame” he emphasized.
Kaieteur News understands that the Opposition, APNU+AFC, has contacted the family offering legal support. Dave Lalltoo has expressed some appreciation for the generosity and sympathy shown by the Opposition and the CMO’s secretary.
A police report was made at the Vreed-en-Hoop police station since the family intends to take legal action against the hospital.
Meanwhile Natalie Caseley is awaiting a response to her application for a court hearing at the Georgetown High Court, against the GPHC as she is certain that her four-year-old son, Jaden Mars, was a victim of malpractice of health practitioners at that institution. Mars died December 2013. Caseley is anxious to receive information on the new investigation that the Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran claimed to have launched some two Mondays ago.
