DEAR EDITOR,
I am not surprised at all by Minister of Health Dr Bheri Ramsaran’s crude and violent remarks towards Ms. Sherlina Nageer. If President Donald Ramotar, who is the Head of State, can essentially threaten a teacher that if it was Mr. Jagdeo he would have slapped him, Guyanese have enough confirmation that the PPP has within its midst leaders who only know one form of public engagement – abuse.
Dr. Bheri Ramsaran had no right to threaten Ms. Nageer for asking honest questions about the crisis in the healthcare system. As a minister, a public office holder, he had a right to conduct himself with dignity and respond to the young lady in a respectful manner. Ms. Nageer posed direct questions which needed honest answers; instead the young lady was abused and threatened by the Minister. Even after the Minister made an apology to Ms. Nageer he continued to threaten her. What an unhealthy state of affair this is.
Dr. Bheri Ramsaran, whose name is on the Election List as a Candidate for the 11th May 2015, should be removed for the health of this nation. He should also resign as minister. Mr. Donald Ramotar, as President and Leader of the PPP/C List should see to it that Dr. Ramsaran goes. Dr. Ramsaran should also be charged and placed before the court like any other citizen. He must not be above our judicial system.
More than half of Guyana’s population is women and if Mr. Ramotar does not do the decent thing and remove this menace from public life the women of the PPP must not vote for the party. Dr. Ramsaran has to be made an example, so that any man out there who wants to hold or holds public office will know such treatment towards women is unacceptable. Men who hold public office also have to set the example for men who do not hold.
The disrespect for women in Guyana has gotten out of hand. I can testify while I was with two presidents, namely Mr. LFS Burnham and Mr. Hugh Desmond Hoyte, women were highly respected. I can also testify that Dr. Ramsaran’s conduct would never have been tolerated by Presidents Burnham and Hoyte.
The PPP leadership has a record for ill-treating women. It represents everything Guyanese must shun and distance themselves from. As a woman I say to my fellow women, the PPP does not deserve another term in office. The PPP leaders have no respect for us. A vote for the PPP is a vote for PPP leaders to continue abusing us. On Monday 11th May, women must join hands as one and vote the PPP out!
