Four outstanding retired teachers with a combined 150 years of service to the educational sector were last Saturday honoured by the cricket teams under the club’s Berbice River Bridge Company Tribute to Retired
Teachers Programme. The four awardees – Cicely Crawford, Marcia Fyffe, Murlin English and Orin O’ Donoghue were honoured during a simple presentation ceremony at the Albion Cricket Ground during the finals of the RHTYSC Busta Champion of Champions 40 overs Tournament.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTYSC Hilbert Foster on behalf of the RHTYSC and the cricket teams thanked the awardees for their outstanding service to the educational sector in Berbice and for the role they played in molding the minds of youths. The RHTYSC, Foster stated strongly believes in honouring teachers who have worked beyond the call of duties. Teachers are society’s most cherished professionals as they are the ones who assist Guyana to produce its leaders, doctors, Lawyers and engineers.
Speaking directly to the awardees, the long serving secretary/CEO praised them for dedicating their energies towards assisting youths to fulfill their potentials. Foster also urged the four awardees to continue serving humanity despite their retirement and specially mentioned those who are less fortunate and in need of assistance. He also urged them to promote the “Say Yes to Education/Sports and No to Drugs and Suicide” message and to be role models to every youth they came into contact with. He expressed gratitude to the Management of the Berbice River Bridge Company especially the Chief Executive Officer, O.D. Samaroo for his continued confidence in the RHTYSC by sponsoring the Tribute to Retired Teachers Programme for the 3rd consecutive year. The RHTYSC since 2001 has honoured a total of 72 retired teachers under the programme.
Speaking on behalf of the Awardees, Ms. Cicely Crawford and Marcia Fyffe expressed gratitude to the RHTYSC for honouring them. Both of them traced their teaching careers history and stated that they would do it all over again if given the opportunity. Mrs. Crawford stated that teaching is a special responsibility as you are responsible for the molding of someone’s mind. She expressed her delight that during her teaching career she was able to nurture the minds of several of the nation’s top leaders.
Each of the awardees received a trophy, Certificate of Excellence and a special collection of gifts. The programme was organized by the Rose Hall Town Farfan and Mendes Ltd. Under 15, Pepsi Under 19 and Intermediate, Bakewell Under 17 and Second Division, Gizmos and Gadgets First Division and Under 21 and the Metro Female Teams.
