DEAR EDITOR
Can you imagine how frustrating it must be for your star columnist, Freddie Kissoon, to get ‘phone calls from people around the country “who do not know about the existence of any human rights organization in this land” (Sunday KN 26th April)? He is now forced to devote time and space in his column to trivia such as “exactly what the GHRA does”, which is clearly unreasonable when he could be more profitably addressing where he had lunch, or his taste in ice-cream (custard, if I remember right) – not to mention so many characters to be assassinated.
May I suggest you pass on to him the press releases GHRA sends to you, some twenty per annum; that way he learns about the GHRA. Were you to publish them, even better, the harassers would then know where to take their complaints.
I would offer to send him the GHRA Secretary’s biennial Report which would answer all of his concerns but some mischief in the KN paper not long ago was brought to my attention and gives me pause. Following Freddie’s proclamation of being the only person the UG Council had ever fired, a letter-writer corrected this version of history by referring to the cases of Sheik Insanally and myself having being fired years earlier. Miraculously the paragraph referring to me disappeared from the version published in KN. Luckily the letter writer had also sent the letter to Stabroek News where the missing paragraph was intact. Please try to avoid these embarrassing incidents, gossip columnists have enough to worry about without having to worry about the possibility that, once in a while, they might need to have recourse to the truth.
Since every reference Freddie makes to the GHRA is preceded by the term ‘well-funded’ and followed by a ‘large office’ please set his mind at rest: he isn’t missing out, if that’s his problem. The GHRA has never received funds for work done in relation to the issues he finds himself being harassed over – complaints about the police, courts, prisons, whatever comes through the door. Secondly, the ‘large office’ which raises his pressure was built and is maintained entirely from fund-raising activities by members and well-wishers, not from donor organizations.
Finally, he should know that most women now prefer separating their professional from their personal lives, a practice to be recommended in any references to women in the GHRA. I hope you find these suggestions constructive and will ensure that human rights triviality will not be allowed in future to divert attention from his struggle to save the nation, one lunch at a time.
