As usual it was an awesome day of goodwill and healthy competitiveness as the Scotiabank’s 18th Annual Golf Tournament and 5th Charities Tournament got underway at the Lusignan Golf Club ground on Sunday 26th April.
In picture the winners and 3 Scotiabank representatives. L to R: I. Gouveia, Country Manager – R. Smith, Dr P. London, J. Cipriani, M. Bhagwandin, S. Webster, P. Prashad (partly hidden) and P. Budhu.
With some 51 golfers registered and a smiling sunshine and cool temperature just excellent for golfing, the golfers teed off at about 12:00 noon, each hoping to carry off the tantalizing prizes offered by Scotiabank.
Mahendra Bhagwandin – net 65 off handicap 24 was the clear champion, followed by Shanella Webster of Beacon Ministries – net 67 off handicap 22, followed by Dr Philbert London, also of Beacon Ministries, with a net 67 off a 27 handicap. Best Gross for the day was Patrick Prashad – 80/9, while Most Honest Golfer was won by Robert Hanoman 81/26. Nearest to the Pin was Ian Gouveia.
Of note to the highly competitive play was the fact that there were four other competitors who could have been vying for a fourth Best Net prize; these were – Carlos Adams 70/26, Maurice Solomon 70/23, Joaan Deo 70/20 and Ian Gouveia 70/15.
A delighted Bhagwandin said, “It was a good all round game for me. With significantly improved driver skill, I played one hole at a time, and thanks to my experienced caddy, Harrichand‘Babyboy’Dhanai, I was able to stay calm and focused after any bad play. Also, the clubs he selected were just right for the job! This is the second tournament I have won, and both times he was my caddy!”
3rd place winner Dr London was pleased with his game, noting that his score increased when he had to take a drop on his penultimate hole because his ball was not found in the rough!
On hand to do the presentations for Scotiabank – Canadian international bank, and a leading financial services provider in over 55 countries – were Country Manager, Mr Raymond Smith; Marketing Manager, Ms Jennifer Cipriani; and Manager of Treasury, Mr Parmeshwar Budhu.
Mr Smith indicated among other things, “I am very pleased to be here at this 18th year of Scotiabank’s association with golf in Guyana. A very central part of Scotiabank’s current sponsorship is the $325,000 that is given back to the community to children charities of the top three winner’s choice.”
Under its Global Bright Future philanthropic programme, Scotiabank channels funds and employee volunteer hours towards initiatives that benefit children in the areas of education, health, social well-being (arts and culture) and sports. Scotiabank has contributed on average some $50 million annually to community causes around the world over the last 5 years.
Mr Smith congratulated the winners and all golfers for supporting the Scotiabank tournament, adding, “I am aware that some of my predecessors played the game very often, but though I have not played golf before, I have already secured a coach and assistant coach to bring me into the game.” Scotiabank’s Robb Street Branch Manager and veteran golfer Brian Hackett was also on hand to assist with the distribution of prizes and the raffle that enabled almost all players present at the closing ceremony to leave with a gift.
