Kraft Toucan Industries Ltd Junior Squash Skill Level tournament – final day…
The Guyana Squash Association, in collaboration with its corporate sponsor
Digicel culminated the Kraft Toucan Industries Junior Skill Level tournament at the Georgetown Club Ltd on Sunday. Eight winners were crowned at the completion of the tournament designed to pit each developing player against opponents of similar caliber. Rebecca Low and Samuel Ince-Carvahal continued to impress as they dominated their respective groups to finish most Outstanding Girl and Boy respectively.
In category, A. Nyron Joseph and Akeila Wiltshire notched up 3-0 victories, with Joseph taking the top spot in the group, Ben Mekdeci taking second and the elder Wiltshire finishing third. Especially impressive was Wiltshire’s victory over Alec Melville (11/4, 11/5, 11/5) as the robust left hander, Melville, was outpaced by the lithe agility of the also left handed Wiltshire.
Shomari Wiltshire emerged winner of Group B, a group which underscored its pedigree for emerging talent. The younger Wiltshire earned a hard fought come from behind victory over Alex Cheeks losing the first two games 5/11, 7/11 then recovered to win the next three 11/7, 11/6, 11/7. Alexander Cheeks walked away with the Most Improved Boy award as well as finishing second, while Daniel Islam edged Anthony Islam 3-1 to secure the third place.
Rebecca Low recovered from a first game loss to the emerging Makeda Harding to complete a 3-1 victory and by extension her domination of group C, as Harding finished second and Maya Collins third.
Unsurprisingly the Most Outstanding Boy emerged from the highly competitive Group D, where Samuel Ince-Carvahal took the award even though he suffered a surprise final day loss to Demetrius DeAbreu, while Ethan and Lucas Jonas finished second and third respectively.
Kirsten Gomes finished atop group E, while also walking away with the Most Improved Girl award. She had to hold her nerve and held on for her first victory over Madison Fernandes 3-1 (11/2, 11/7, 11/13, 12/10) to relegate Fernandes to second in the group, as Jason Gomes finished third.
James Mekdeci completed a 3-0 victory over Nathan Rahaman on Sunday to win group F, with Gareth DaSilva placing second and Nathan Rahaman third.
Meanwhile, Mohryan Baksh, Liam Carpenter and Chad DeAbreu finished first through third respectively in group G with Baksh (2-0) and DeAbreu (2-1) completing victories over Teija Edwards and Beau Fernandes respectively.
Louis DaSilva (1st), Isabella Ramjohn (2nd) and Shiloh Asregado (3rd) occupied the winner’s row of Group H as DaSilva and Asregado secured 2-0 victories on Sunday.
