DEAR EDITOR
With general elections to elect a new government literally days away, I want to take this time to express my disgust with the stance taken by the PPP/C in relation to use or rather abuse of the media, both private and state-owned.
In Berbice (not sure if it’s only Berbice only), we are constantly bombarded, from about 7 in the morning to sometimes 11 in the night with PPP talk shows and programmes, I have nothing against this, but being a young voter (I’m 23 years old), what I’m against is only seeing and hearing the views of the governing party, there are no APNU/AFC programmes being shown on television in Berbice, except for DTV channel 8 (which I can’t access).
It should be noted that in Berbice there are about five, yes, five channels in Berbice, and only on DTV 8 and LRTVS channel 10, periodically, which sometimes shows some programmes of the opposition, but the ruling party predominantly gets more time to express its views and opinions.
Within the mediocre amount of channels we have here, there’s one NTN channel 26 which was recently launched just in time for the election; one can clearly see its bias in ignoring that there are other parties running for office, the opposition doesn’t exist in its book. It mirrors the operation of NCN Berbice, not a single opposition ad not a single programme.
In this election, it is important to make a wise decision by choice of voting for the party who I think is right and I will only do this after hearing the plans and policies that BOTH parties have for me and the future of Guyana, including its youths. I can then make my decision on which party to choose after examining both, but as it stands, there are only the views of the ruling party being broadcast.
It’s a mockery of the “return to democracy” phrase which is constantly feed to the Guyanese nation when the only democracy one can see is the PPP/C’s version.
Maybe we do need change.
