DEAR EDITOR,
We have two weeks left before the General and Regional Elections. The ruling party knows that it is fighting for its life with rampant accusations of corruption. It has been the single most important issue that has Guyanese very unhappy.
Corruption is the reason why our quality of life is the way it is – why our roads are falling apart; why projects like Amaila Falls hydro and the Specialty Hospital are in trouble. The most recent example is the much publicized issue of the Berbice Bridge which Government will more likely have to take over because of its cash situation.
There is a big reason why we are where we are…our system of checks and balances is simply not working.
The courts are in trouble because of skewed decisions; the police are accused of shaking down citizens and even the Guyana Revenue Authority seems to be sleeping. And I don’t use the word sleeping very lightly. There are a number of big businesses being established. You wonder where the money is coming from. Yet GRA seems to be taking a hands-off approach in going after tax evaders.
While the small taxpayers are being bled, paying double on the VAT, we have major companies like New GPC essentially getting away with murder. How else can you explain where one company would find US$30M to offer for the Bourda cricket ground and adjacent football facility to build a new stadium? Where is the money coming from?
Mr. Sattaur, instead of joining the bandwagon of the ruling party whenever there are questions, to ask for evidence, there are cases where Guyanese are being ripped off.
Check those highly favoured major entities, including some of the Chinese conglomerates. It would be interesting to see what taxes are being paid, relative to their enormous earnings. And while you are on that, please check on a few ministers who sold their homes before the stipulated 10-year period was up, for exorbitant sums, yet no Capital Gains taxes were paid.
Mr. Sattaur likes to write letters when we the citizens raise concerns. I would love to see the reply to this.
