Suriname set for Thursday evening at the Andre Kamperven Stadium in Parimaribo, the Golden Jaguars held their final training session yesterday afternoon at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz speaking with the media during a break stated that he is pleased with the effort and desire shown by the players to date in every aspect of the camp which he believes is good for the programme.
“The Guyana based players are really eager to show that they have a big stake in this programme.”
Given the nature of the game here at the moment with regards to lack of competitive football, Shabazz noted that the Suriname game will be the ideal test for the players to show how much minutes they can play at the international level.
“They don’t have the help of players coming in who are in season, so it will be an interesting truth that will be discovered after this game and exactly what we want to know going into the selection process for the qualifiers will be told to us.”
Shabazz stated emphatically that they will be going all out to win noting that every time Guyana play Suriname the intention is to win.
“We have a big rivalry with this country, we have put tears in their eyes and they have put tears in our eyes, how can we forget. So we go and try to win and get a positive result, this is football.”
Post Suriname, Shabazz signaled that the intention of his Technical team is to secure two high quality opponents that will really test the Golden Jaguars ahead of the June World Cup Qualifying matches against St. Vincent & the Grenadines.
“We would like to get two games more against tough CONCACAF opponents, maybe Central America, maybe top teams in the Caribbean like Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Cuba, Santo Domingo, Guatemala, Honduras, those top teams that can beat us.”
Guyana’s most successful Head Coach said he recognizes that it takes money in order to achieve his wishes.
“Of course it takes money to get these games and everybody put their money in elections so I don’t know. Everybody is focused on elections but we are focused on resurrection of Guyana’s football.”
