A Corentyne housewife and her family were on Sunday evening attacked and robbed by five armed, masked and barefoot bandits who relieved her of over $11M in cash and jewelry.
The hapless woman, Jasmattie Harrichand, called ‘Shalini’, 39, a housewife, lives at Lot 5 No. 46 Village, Corentyne, Berbice, with her husband, Ravindranauth Seelall Harrichand, c/d ‘Rajin’, 48.
Her husband is a rice farmer. Also sharing the home is their son Ravindarnauth Harrichand, c/d ‘Ravi’, 21, who is also a farmer and their daughter Amrita Seelall Harrichand c/d ‘Valini’, 12, a student of Tagore Secondary School.
At the time of the robbery the woman’s husband was not at home. The family was robbed by five masked men who were dressed in long dark clothing and brown and black topes. The bandits were barefooted and were armed with three rifles, two knives, and one pistol.
According to reports, about 22:15 hrs the woman was at home when she received a telephone call on her landline informing her that thieves were at No. 48 Village. At the time her husband was not at home, her son and a friend were downstairs. The woman subsequently “called out to them to come upstairs”. While they were in the process of going upstairs they were confronted by the bandits, who took them back to the lower flat, tied their hands behind their backs and were forced to lie face down. The bandits then demanded cash and jewelry, which was handed over.
Jasmattie and her daughter were gagged and made to kneel on the floor.
The bandits escaped with a quantity of jewelry, one Blackberry cell phone, one Nokia cell phone, one Blu cell phone, two tablets, two cheques totaling $958,335.00, another for Demerara Bank valued at $375,840 and $350,000 in local currency.
The family stated that during the ordeal the bandits questioned them about whom they were voting for. The bandits then placed them in a washroom, and made good their escape in an unknown direction.
The police were subsequently informed and descended on the scene, but by then, the bandits had escaped. Investigations are continuing.
