-Quarter-finals on tonight at GFC
He is among the leading contenders in the Most Valuable Player race and his
dynamic performance against hot favourite North Ruimveldt only served notice to the other aspirants that dismantling him from his perch will take some doing.
Sophia’s pint-sized striker Dwayne Lowe, who has been the chief tormentor for opposing teams since the start of the competition, fired in both of his team’s goals to send North Ruimveldt crashing out of the tournament and set up a quarter-final engagement against a strong Sparta Boss unit tonight, at the GFC ground.
Playing before another solid turnout, Lowe gave his team the ascendancy after thirteen minutes when he booted in from close range.
However, North Ruimveldt responded through Nikosie Barker, whose effort came in the 20th minute, before the effervescent Lowe returned to seal the deal five minutes later.
In another enthralling encounter, Bent Street led by a double from former national striker Anthony Abrams rebounded from being two-nil down to beat West Back Road 3-2.
Finding themselves down 2-0 after Jarel Tyrell (8th) and Odel Young (15th) had given West Back Road a seemingly comfortable lead at the break, Abrams turned up the heat in the second period, netting in the26th and 33rd minutes to book his team’s place in the quarters. Ronson Williams booted in their second goal in the 25th minute.
Tournament favourites Sparta Boss possessing players the calibre of Gregory Richardson, Devon Millington and Travis Grant, all of whom have donned national colours, survived a scare from a determined Globe Yard, before prevailing 2-1.
Sheldon Shepherd, who received a red card after scoring Sparta’s opening goal and Grant were the marksmen for the winners, while Josiah Charles’ 24th minute strike had made things a bit interesting for a while.
In the night’s first game, Kitty Weavers continue to progress without much attention as they booted Broad Street out of the tournament with a 1-0 triumph.
Sherwin Vincent’s 14th minute strike was just enough to help cement their place in the last eight.
Meanwhile, all the teams in the eight groups received cash incentives from Busta representative Ravin Singh in the GFC Pavilion.
