An American citizen who was promised a large sum of money to traffic cocaine, was handed a three year sentence yesterday, after he pleaded guilty to a drug trafficking charge.
Antwon Brumfield, 20, of Nandy Park, admitted to trafficking 2.568KG of cocaine on April 24, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri.
The charge was read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Police Corporal, Bharrat Mangru told the court that on the day in question at about 16:00hrs, ranks from the narcotics branch of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were monitoring outgoing passengers on a Caribbean airline flight destined for the John F. Kennedy Airport, USA.
Mangru added that the defendant’s luggage was checked and during scanning, the ranks observed a bulky package inside of the suitcases. They contacted the defendant and searched the suitcases in his presence.
Two photo albums were removed from the suitcases and ranks observed that two pages were thicker than the others. Further checks were made and the drug was unearthed from the pages.
Mangru said that Brumfield admitted that the drug belonged to him when questioned at the airport. He also informed the lawmen that he was offered US$10,000 to transport the illegal substance.
When asked by the magistrate if he had anything to say before being sentenced, the defendant told the court “I was going through some hard times and I got the job so I took it.” He added that he was just trying to make life better for his family.
In addition, he was ordered to pay a fine of $30,000.
