Rollers and St. Cuthbert’s win male and female categories
By Samuel Whyte
International volleyball returned to Berbice after an absence of over 16 years,
when the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) hosted Suriname’s senior male volleyball club champions – Yelyco. That team clashed with a GVF President’s Eleven in a friendly match at the recently commissioned Modular Tile All Weather Volleyball Court at the Port Mourant Community Centre on the Corentyne.
The game was played last Sunday, (April 19) in front of a sizeable crowd of volleyball fans. The last time an international game was played in Berbice was 1988 when Berbice took on Barbados Bombers.
The crowd was treated to a scintillating display of top class volleyball by the Surinamese who are accustomed to playing indoors but quickly adapted to the outdoor conditions and used the strong wind to their advantage to defeat the GVF President’s X1 in three straight sets: -25-21, 25-21 and 25-19.
The friendly match was organized by the GVF to afford the Surinamese an opportunity
to play on the new surface which was made available by the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) through the South American Volleyball Confederation (CSV) as a gift to the GVF.
Before the friendly game was played the GVF staged a third division competition that attracted eight males and two female teams from across the country. After a “round-robin” play off in the preliminary stage, Rollers of New Amsterdam defeated PMTC 2 to win the male category, while St. Cuthbert’s defeated PMTC females to win the female category.
At the presentation ceremony held in semi-darkness, President of the GVF Mr. John Flores thanked all for their participation especially Yelyco of Suriname and the teams that journeyed from the different parts of the country. He had special praise for the St Cuthbert female team that is domiciled in the Amerindian Village located some 50 miles up the left bank of the Mahaica River. He also thanked the officials and all others who assisted to make the event a success.
President of the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA), Gregory Rambarran, also had words of compliments for the visiting Suriname and other visiting teams.
Yelyco of Suriname and the GVF President’s eleven both received trophies. Trophies were also presented to the first and second place winners in both categories of the 3rd Division Competition.
Rambarran also presented Mikasa MVA 330 balls to the winners of the 3rd Division Competition on behalf of the BVA.
The presentations were made by the GVF President, Mr. Verdy Getrouw of Yelyco, Suriname and officials of the GVF. Trophies for individual performances were presented to: – Kevin Sporkslede of Yelyco (Best Spiker & Most Valuable Player (MVP)), Dion Brunnings of Yelyco (Best Setter), Juan Calzado of GVF ( Best Receiver).
