Recognizing the work being done by Help and Shelter to better the lives of abused
women in Guyana, President of the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown Central, Isha Husain-Singh, has said that the club will continue support to the shelter.
She commended the shelter for the works they have done since the 1994 commissioning. Despite the shelter being shut down on two occasions due to financial difficulties, it is now stable as the Guyana Government has given Help and Shelter a $4 million grant. Support by other entities such as the Inner Wheel Club of Georgetown Central.
The club in observance of their 30th anniversary presented a hamper of household items, to the shelter in a simple handing over ceremony at the Help and Shelter’s Homestretch Avenue location recently.
Husain-Singh, said that the club has agreed to give three of the women residing at the shelter, funding to undertake short courses in the areas of sewing, manicure and pedicure and care for the elderly. The initiative is meant to prepare them for a new life in which they can earn a living for themselves and the little ones in their charge.
“Our club’s main fundraising events are our annual tea party, a take away lunch and recently added variety concert. With the proceeds, we manage to take care of community projects to which our members have given consent. Hence, Ixora has been chosen” said Husain-Singh.
The donation was one of the customary activities by the group who now celebrates. Husain-Singh, the second time president of the club, said that she always see it fit to choose Help and Shelter, as she also serves as an executive at the shelter. “I know the urgency and need of the shelter; as it works to better the lives of women,” emphasized Husain-Singh.
She added, with monetary donations the shelter was refurbished on two occasions; retiled, repainted and the kitchen was upgraded.
Husain indicated that she does not want the “bucks” to stop at the giving of the hamper basket, there is a need for continuous help as the shelter depends solely on funding.
Help and Shelter, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) provides shelter for abused women and their children. Counseling is also available for women and their partners. Margaret Kertzious said that all services provided by the organization are free of cost. The women are granted six months of living at the shelter, however, the time is negotiable.
