City Magistrate Annette Singh sentenced a taxi driver to one month imprisonment after he pleaded
guilty to assaulting his reputed wife.
Delon Logan, 25, of South Ruimveldt Gardens, confessed that he assaulted Umadei Narine on April 21, at the Sunflower Taxi Service.
Police Prosecutor, Adduni Inniss told the court that the two parties share a relationship and have been living together for awhile. She related that on the day in question, the defendant slapped the woman twice and attempted to throw her over a verandah, while asking her, “Yuh want to dead? Yuh want to dead?”
Inniss indicated that Narine became scared and reported the matter to the North Ruimveldt Police Outpost. While at the station the woman related that her husband has a habit of abusing her.
Logan explained to the magistrate that he and his wife are having problems because of her continuous infidelity. He added that he was very hurt by the woman’s actions so he confronted her on the day in question. He said that they had an argument and claimed that Narine hit him.
“It was nothing serious yuh worship, I was just expressing myself,” a sobbing Logan recounted.
The defendant stressed that he still loves the woman and does not want them to separate because they have a child together.
However, the magistrate did not agree with the accused. She told him that if the woman is being unfaithful to him, he should end the relationship or they can attend counseling together.
Nonetheless, Logan was handed a one month jail term on an offence that attracts a maximum penalty of six months. He was also ordered to attend counseling at Help and Shelter when he is released from prison.
Both parties were bonded to keep the peace for one year, failure to do so will result in them being imprisoned for two months.
