Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has apologized to all residents for the reduction in service experienced during the last three months as a result of rehabilitation works at the Kingelly Well Station, West Coast Berbice.
This was in respond to statements published in the April 19, 2015, edition of Kaieteur News, in the article titled ‘No. 28 Village residents without potable water’.
According to Public Relations Officer, Timothy Austin, the company experienced technical difficulties at the well station which required a new pump. GWI installed a temporary pump while the replacement was being sourced. The smaller capacity of the temporary pump resulted in a reduction in service.
However, following the completion of rehabilitation works at the Kingelly Well Station on Monday, water service was restored to the previous level of service.
“The company wishes to address the specific situation that exists in Carmichael Street. Upon investigation, GWI’s West Coast Berbice Team determined that there exists no distribution pipelines in the small section of Carmichael Street highlighted in the Kaieteur News article.
“This section of the street without distribution lines has four households. Further, GWI is not in possession of any water service connection application forms from the residents who reside in that section of the street.”
The caption which accompanied the image published with the article indicated that the excavation in the area was created by residents to access water. This assertion is entirely false. GWI’s West Coast Berbice team can substantiate that the excavation depicted, was created by GWI during rehabilitation works to remove air from the pipelines which serve the portion of Carmichael Street which is receiving water from GWI.
“There exists no hole which was created by residents.”
GWI’s West Coast Berbice Team contacted the residents highlighted in the article and advised them of the application process for new water service connections.
