DEAR EDITOR,
Please permit me to congratulate one of the most fearless and dedicated campaigners of human rights in this country.
I first came across Freddie Kissoon as a freshman at UG in the late 90s, as he drove onto the tarmac. We were furious because he interrupted our game of cricket. Ironically Minister Irfaan Ali was batting at the time. As we were about to shout at him not to interrupt the game, we were told ‘that’s Freddie Kissoon boy’.
Immediately there was something about this gentleman that caught my eyes, his number plate on the Burgundy vehicle he was driving.
Later that afternoon as I came from my chemistry labs, there was heightened security on the campus. When I enquired I was told that President Cheddi Jagan would be giving a guest lecture at Freddie’s class in the George Walcott Lecture Theatre.
As they say, the rest is now history. Freddie Kissoon is now a household name in Guyana and his columns can be considered a regular ingredient in our daily diets.
Over the past months Freddie, this tireless champion, has had some notable successes and deserve his kudos.
First and foremost Banks DIH. I recently purchased bread and tennis rolls for my family. I was given a two -handle bag to put the items. It was simply amazing to experience this shift in policy to the comfort of the customer. Still with Banks DIH. I purchased a 2-litre ice cream and, as is customary, I rubbed my thumb on the ink that identifies the flavour.
On careful examination of the container, the flavour was written boldly at the top and it could not be erased. I checked again and it was true, you can no longer erase the flavour written on the containers of a Banks ice cream.
Freddie’s one -man campaign bore even better fruits recently.
Coming down to the city from the east coast recently, there was a police roadblock. Believe me, you could have easily identified the officer in command, the marked police vehicle and all ranks displayed their identification tags proudly, and this process was being conducted next to the Vigilance police station.
Sir, you tried to explain to us the complexity of the human mind, and pains philosophers went through to explain these complexities. As a Guyanese I am aware of the complexities of the Guyanese mind. However I am confident that despite these complexities good sense will prevail come May 11.
I will be first to congratulate you when you come by Demico where some of the best minds in Guyana usually congregate to discuss issues of the day.
My words will be simple, ‘Freddie, you did it!’ I know many people read your articles and you are telling the truth about Guyana.
Congratulations sir , and like many others such as Nielson Mc Kenzie, Lenno Craig, Ian Bentham and others who are your known buddies in this fight, it is my wish that your fire will get hotter in time , because we have to maintain this change we are fighting for.
Keep up the good work sir.
