A 75-year-old woman is likely to have her right leg amputated after a truck hit her on the Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD) Public Road then drove over her leg around 13:45 hrs yesterday.
The accident occurred in the vicinity of the Providence Police Station. The woman has been identified as Ramdai Dookdat of Herstelling, EBD.
According to reports, the woman was crossing the road when the truck, which was heading north on the East Bank Demerara Public Road, struck her down then drove over her leg.
At the Diamond Diagnostic Centre yesterday, medical personnel were preparing to send the woman to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where she will undergo surgery.
The driver of the truck was at the scene of the accident relating to traffic ranks what really took place.
An eyewitness told this newspaper that a vehicle stopped to allow another vehicle and the woman to cross the road. She was standing on the western side, heading in the opposite direction.
“A truck stopped to allow the NDC (Neighbourhood Democratic Council) vehicle to pass across the road. There was a bus at the back of that truck and then another truck (the one that was involved in the accident). After the NDC vehicle passed, the woman crossed but the truck at the back, like the driver didn’t want wait, and he overtake and drive in front and hit the woman,” the eyewitness said.
He added, “The truck side barely hit her but because she is old, she fell on the road and the truck run over her foot. The driver didn’t know he hit her. We had to shout and tell him to stop.”
The woman was at press time in the theatre while the driver remains in police custody.
