GCB/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers Inter County U19 tourney…
By Zaheer Mohamed
Off-spinner Sagar Hathiramani grabbed six wickets as the Select U17 team and
Demerara played to a draw when the third and final round game of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers inter-county U19 three-day tournament concluded yesterday.
Chasing 251 for first innings points, Demerara resumed on their overnight score of 52 without loss and finished the day on 219-9 off 75 overs. The entire first session was lost due to rain and when play finally began after lunch at the Everest Cricket Club, opener Ronaldo Renee (17) was bowled by Hathiramani without adding to his overnight score. Sherfene Rutherford, who resumed on 30, timed the ball well and soon reached his fifty off 77 balls. The left hander then punched pacer Carlton Jacques to the point boundary before Hathiramani sent back Tevin Imlach (02) to leave the score at 66-2.
After hitting eight fours, Rutherford was caught at slip off left arm spinner Ashmead Nedd for 60 while Hathiramani bowled Chetnarine Pooran (00), leaving Demerara in a spot of bother at 114-4. Askhaya Persaud slammed six fours, but after adding 24 for the fifth wicket with Travis Persaud, he was caught off pacer Joshua Jones for 35 who also sent back Travis Persaud for 13 as the U17s continued their quest for first innings honours.
Malcolm Hubbard and Ershad Alli frustrated their opponents somewhat with a 32-run seven-wicket partnership, but Hathiramani ended their resistance by uprooting the stumps of Alli for 15. Hubbard pulled Jones over mid-wicket for a maximum before Hathiramani, who maintained a steady length, had him caught for 32 (2×4,1×6). The spinner then bowled Daniel Basdeo (02) to leave Demerara in danger of conceding first innings at 196-9 with seven overs remaining in the day’s play.
However Mark Hamilton (18*) and Carlton Jacques (09*) held their nerves to see their team to the close without further hiccups. Hathiramani who finished with 6-59, dedicated his performance to his late mother; Jones had 2-45 and Nedd 1-33.
Sherfene Rutherford was given the man of the match award for scoring a half century and picking up four wickets.
Scores: U17s 251 all out (Raymond Perez 69, Ronaldo Mohamed 69, Adrian Sukwah 52, Sherfene Rutherford 4-30, Ershad Alli 3-28, Hubbard 2-28). Demerara 219-9 (Rutherford 60, Hathiramani 6-59).
