The road fatality figure continues to climb following the death of a mechanic one day after he was
injured in a freak accident.
Dead is Abdul Naffi Francis, 25, a father one, of Maycock Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.
Francis died on Tuesday at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) after he was rushed there following an accident on Monday evening at Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to information around 21:30 hrs Francis was riding his Honda motorbike CE 7435, south along the JC Chandisingh access road when he crashed into an illegal speed bump which was installed by businessman, Orin Dowell, a few weeks ago.
The impact caused the motorcyclist to fly over his handle bars and to land some distance away. He reportedly suffered severe injuries including a fractured neck, broken spine, brain injuries and multiple injuries about his body.
Persons living in the vicinity reported that after hearing the crash they ventured outside to enquire what was happening. After searching in the darkness they saw the injured Francis lying on the road.
Francis was picked up and rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, before being transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital and subsequently the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was hooked up to a life support machine until he succumbed around 18:00 hrs Tuesday.Information also revealed that the businessman had destroyed the road and was ordered to fix the thoroughfare; as such he did some repairs and erected some speed bumps 12 inches high.
Residents vented their anger and are calling for charges to be instituted against the businessman who they say is selfish and thinks only about himself.
They also want the illegal speed bump removed immediately. The residents are also upset with the lackadaisical attitude of the Town Council who, despite numerous complaints, never visited the scene.
The dead man’s mother, Shirley Singh, described her son as a humble and hardworking and dedicated individual. He is survived by his mother, wife and child.
