‘The murder trial of Delon Glasgow was cut short on Thursday after a no- case submission presented
on his behalf was upheld by Justice Navindra Singh.
Glasgow, 18, of Lot 687 East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, was accused of murdering Jules Walker between August 10 and August 11, 2013. His trial was being conducted at the High Court in Georgetown.
The argument that Glasgow had no case to answer was presented, his Attorney Raymond Alli. The submission was presented in the absence of the Jury after State Prosecutor; Narissa Leander indicated that she had no further witnesses to call.
Remains of the 33-year old victim were recovered in the Princes Street canal in close proximity to a koker that facilitates drainage into the Demerara River. Reports are the deceased was last seen in the company of the accused on August 10.
Walker’s relatives mounted a search for him after he failed to return to his Lot 7 Ogle Front East Coast Demerara residence. The following day, his body was seen floating near the koker at Princes and High Streets, Georgetown. The corpse bore several marks of violence. The man had reportedly been involved in a heated argument with another person hours before he disappeared. Police investigations were carried out and Glasgow was arrested and subsequently charged with the offence.
During the trial, eyewitness Vaughn Jeffrey testified that he saw Glasgow and Walker, the night he (Walker) allegedly disappeared. He told the court that he was working as a security guard for a Hardware Store on Princes Street when he saw Glasgow hit Walker in the head with a beer bottle before running away.
The men were embroiled in a heated argument, he recounted. State Pathologist, Dr Nehaul Singh, told the court that a post mortem examination revealed that the victim had died by drowning. The doctor explained that marks of compression were seen on the victim’s neck, which indicated that he was choked manually.
Justice Singh subsequently ruled that there was insufficient evidence against the accused to prove a case of murder against him. The Judge directed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty in favour of Glasgow setting him free of murder.
