The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on Monday expressed its concerns with regard to the transparency of the recruitment of polling day staff and the Guyana Election Commission (GECOM)’s “intentional or unavoidable” delay in announcing the final list of polling places.
This was done as PPP General Secretary, Clement Rohee hosted the Party’s weekly press conference.
The PPP had made several pleas to GECOM advocating for public vetting of Election Day personnel however, GECOM has responded on each occasion giving details as to why this cannot happen.
Further, GECOM made a commitment to the political parties that last minute changes to polling places will be avoided as much as possible and where unavoidable then it will be done in collaboration with the political parties. “Hence, the PPP calls on GECOM to start publishing these places for public knowledge and to avoid confusion on E-Day as in 2011,” said Rohee.
The General Secretary also reiterated the Party’s call on GECOM to intensify its voters’ education programme. “This must be done in every single hinterland, riverain and rural community where there is limited or no access to television and/or radio. Moreover, a targeted approach must be done to edify the thousands of first time voters on the list. The PPP is confident that proper voters’ education will serve to strengthen the electoral process and ease potential confusion on E-Day,” said Rohee.
