Despite the views of several political commentators and Dr. Cheddi Jagan’s two children, the late politician’s
nephew and candidate for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Dr. Clive Jagan, is convinced that his party has not strayed from the values and principles of its founding father.
Dr. Clive Jagan has, in fact, lashed out at the media saying it has been very biased in its reportage of the matter. He is contending that there is no valid proof that his party has moved away from Jagan’s principles even though his cousins believe so.
The young Jagan, who is a dental surgeon, told members of the media yesterday at a press conference hosted at Freedom House, Robb Street, that what he has seen is development. He believes, “Time has changed from then to now…people have achieved more.”
During a press conference last month, former President Bharrat Jagdeo was asked about his sprawling mansion in the Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara area that he created.
Jagdeo said that Government Ministers do not have to live in logies (slave quarters) to prove that they are honest. He said that Dr. Jagan lived in the upscale Bel Air area but there were no questions about whether he was corrupt.
He said that Jagan’s abode was not typical of all Guyanese, and insisted that the area was a prime one.
It wasn’t long after that former PPP stalwart and longstanding friend of the Jagans, Ralph Ramkarran says that it is “a sin” for Jagdeo to compare the ”Cadillac lifestyle” he secured for himself during his presidency, with the modest lifestyle of Dr. Cheddi Jagan.
Ramkarran had said that the impression given by Jagdeo to the effect that Dr. Jagan
“built a mansion, at the time comparable to his own, in an existing exclusive area is completely false and disingenuous.”
Ramkarran said that the fact that PPP members allowed Jagdeo’s “false claims against its revered leader, dragging the latter down to his level, to go unchallenged is a manifestation of his overweening dominance of the PPP’s agenda and narrative and its destructive character.
Also, the late politician’s daughter, Nadira Jagan-Brancier had said that she was disappointed that Jagdeo would compare his opulent lifestyle to her parents.
She said that the current leaders of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and Government lack “the very, very, very high moral standards” which her parents embodied when they were alive.
Jagan-Brancier had scolded the party for putting out platforms using her parents’ name— particularly her father’s— and not living up really and truly to what her parents had stood for.
But yesterday, the dentist stated that people’s lifestyles have changed and that he still sees
“the PPP as the party that will take us forward…the only party that has democracy at heart.”
Clive Jagan told members of the media that “In terms of moving away from their principles I really don’t agree with that, because I have seen development. Presumptions are made that they are moving away, but there is no valid proof that the party has indeed moved away.”
“They still stand for the same policies, they still stand for progress, they still stand for democracy…they still stand for freedom of the press and everything else is still going on. People can jump up and say anything and the press will carry it…I don’t really believe the party has moved away from the principles.”
Dr. Jagan’s son, Joey Jagan’s position, that the PPP moved away from the principles of Jagan and that the lifestyle of the Government, you see a difference as well as the desire of his father to have an inclusionary government whereby persons from various strata of society involved in Government.
Responding to questions on this, Clive Jagan, said when Jagan came in power in 1992, he believed in inclusion and he started with City Council and the elections in terms of sharing governments.
He said some trust needs to be established but the opposition “has not given any trust…the Opposition has not changed their attitude towards the PPP.”
“When the old man came into power in ‘92 he wanted inclusionary governance…some trust was needed to be established before they could move forward. But the opposition over this period, has not really shown any (inclination towards this)..they have always been antagonistic,” said Jagan.
With respect to the lifestyle difference between the Party officials then and now, Clive Jagan opined “Lifestyles have changed. He (Cheddi Jagan) was a very simple man…he had sheep in the yard to mow the lawns… Time has changed from then to now…people have achieved more.”
