7th Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Secondary Football …
Christianburg/Wismar trounced Linden Technical Institute 4-1, while Mackenzie High and Wisburg battled to a nil all stalemate when the 7th edition of the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial Secondary Football Championships kicked off on Tuesday last at the Wisburg School ground, in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden.
Representatives from the participating schools display the uniforms and balls donated to them by the Memorial Foundation.
Christianburg/Wismar were led to victory on account of a brace of goals each from Kellon Primo (3, 56) and Shane Luckie (9, 46). Lucky was later evicted from the game via a straight red card in the 48th minute. LTI’s consolation goal came off the boot of Randy Hohenkirk in the 11th minute.
According to the organisers, this year’s competition will be reduced since the Memorial Foundation, a non-profit entity that promotes development through football at various levels in Linden, wanted to continue its positive input in the development of ‘The World Game’, and be able to meet refereeing obligations under the GFF’s new structure.
The tournament now sees the eight participating schools split into two groups, where the top two teams in each group, after one round of play goes forward to contest the semifinal for a chance to play in the championship match; a considerable change from its league / knockout format which exposed the youths to a lot more competitive football action.
Before Tuesdays commencement, each of the eight participating schools received uniforms and balls from overseas based Lindener James ‘Gads’ Dennis who encouraged the youngsters to put their best foot forward in keen competition and fair play as they wear their respective gears with pride.
Matches will continue today at the same venue with another double header. Harmony Secondary will engage Linden Foundation in the first game from 14:45hrs with the main event between New Silvercity Secondary and Marcia Craig Educational Institute.
The Memorial Foundation is extending gratitude to the Guyana Youth Development Association of New York Inc., Fantasia Comfort Zone Taxi Service and Mr. James Dennis for their continued support towards the tournament.
