Guyana’s top club side Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United recorded their first win in six
outings against Suriname’s Inter Moengatopoe, a 3-0 win when the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship Group 1 kicked off yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Goals from Daniel Wilson, Captain Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson and Grenadian Kithson Bain allowed Alpha to break a long running jinx against the top Surinamese club side which took them one step closer to winning the group.
Inter Moengotapoe looked a solid unit in the opening minutes of the game and while Alpha were able to progress deep in the opponents defensive third, finishing was way off par.
The leading Surinamese club side kept pushing forward, penetrating down the flanks and midfield where Alpha looked vulnerable. Alpha were also guilty of giving up the ball too easy in the opening exchanges.
However, as the game matured, the local club champions were able to get a better flow and this resulted in the opening goal which saw Daniel Wilson shooting past goalkeeper Huiswoud Obrendo in the 27th after receiving a pass from Kithson Bain.
It was ample reward for the Guyanese side which created the better plays and was most
troubling in the visitors attacking third. Alpha were able to secure their one nil advantage up until the half even as Inter Moengotapoe searched for the neutralizing goal.
Captain Richardson could have doubled the advantage on the stroke of half time but his powerful right foot shot was robustly blocked by Obrendo coming off his line in acrobatic style to deny Richardson and Alpha.
Having lost to the visitors twice at home, a similar amount of occasions in French Guiana and once in Suriname, Alpha needed to up their game in the final 45 minutes to keep the visitors at bay and secure a victory.
The way they came out suggested that they were on course for their first win in six encounters as they took the challenge to their rivals with improved efficiency in the midfield while nullifying plays on the flanks.
With nine minutes gone in the second half, Panamanian midfielder Manuel Vargas, a regular with Alpha at this level, made an enterprising run down the right side, evading the Inter Moengotapoe midfielders and right side defenders, found himself just inside the area where he let loose a
left foot bullet that was partially blocked by Obrendo.
The ricocheted ball found the path of Captain Richardson just at the top of the six yard box and despite being marked by two players he was still was able to outdo them as he headed past Obrendo to his right for the second goal in the 54th minute.
Alpha were now in the driver’s seat and did their utmost to keep the opponents at bay. A few more chances came the way of the home team but they were not efficient in the final third as they would have loved to be.
Bain, who came close to scoring on a few occasions, was finally able to get it right on the stroke of full time. Second half substitute Sheldon Holder took the ball almost to the goal line in the Inter Moengotapoe half before squaring it back to find Bain just outside the six.
Bain’s made no mistake with his powerful left foot shot that screamed past Obrendo to put the preverbal icing on the cake for Alpha’s 3-0 win.
Speaking after yesterday’s game, Head Coach Dover said that their approach was to apply early pressure to the Surinamese side with a view of taking away their confidence as well as to get early goals.
He noted that in a group with three teams and only one coming out, goals are very important. The experienced tactician took a closer look at the performance of his charges.
“Well there are a few things that need working on as we go back to the drawing board. Finishing is a situation that has plagued us but it’s good to see that we hit the nest three times but they were still a number of chances that we should have converted and that is an area well work on.
We would try our best to strengthen our central midfield which is an area we need to secure for the next game.”
Next in line for Alpha would be the Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago clash on Sunday but the side from Soca Land will first meet Inter Moengotapoe tomorrow. The entire Central FC side and management were in the stands at the Stadium to get a glimpse of both sides.
