Goallllll…Sparta Boss Sheldon Shepherd (partly hidden on the left flank) beats Charlestown goalkeeper to his left in their clash on Tuesday night, at the GFC ground.
due to club commitments, Sparta Boss, just as they were required to do in their opening fixture, came from behind to earn full points and secure a spot in the next phase of the Busta Soft Shoe Football Competition which continued on Tuesday night, at the GFC ground.
Playing in the final game of the night against a formidable Charlestown lineup, the usually efficient Sparta Boss unit fell behind after five minutes through a thunderous strike from Clyde Bascom, who unleashed from just around the halfway line to stun the opposing goalkeeper.
However, unlike what had occurred in their previous encounter when they fell two behind, Sparta Boss gained the equalizer courtesy of a firm shot from close range by Denis Edwards in the 14th minute as the game remained deadlocked at the half.
Charlestown, however, seemed determined not to relinquish their advantage for too long and regained the lead two minutes after the resumption when the skilful Bascom rifled in once more from distance for a 2-1 lead.
That advantage only lasted for one minute as Sheldon Shepherd restored parity when he beat the goalkeeper to his left from just inside the penalty area as the two teams treated the large crowd to some exciting exchanges.
All the while, former national striker Devon Millington, who Sparta Boss was relying on to cut apart the Charlestown backline was being kept in check by some impressive marking.
It took a beautiful sequence of passes between Shepherd, Millington and Edwards that staggered the Charlestown defence to untie the scoreboard and give Sparta Boss the lead for the first time.
The play started just inside the Sparta Boss half as Shepherd found Millington on the left flank, before he cut inside drawing two defenders to him, but left Edwards wide open and all alone to slap past the hapless goalkeeper for a 3-2 lead.
They held that ascendancy until the final whistle sounded.
In another fascinating encounter, Kitty Weavers held off a determined effort from Leopold Street to gain full points.
The irresistible Andre Sookhoo’s brace in the 6th and 20th minutes failed to deter an equally resolute Kitty Weavers unit that was loaded with former club standouts.
The North Georgetown based side took the lead in the fifth minute when Sherwin Vincent made good on a squared pass across goal to tap in from close range.
However, Sookhoo was equal to the task as he netted one minute later to level the proceedings, before Wendell St. Hill headed in following a floated cross from the right side for a 2-1 lead.
Sookhoo was once again to the rescue of Leopold Street as he booted in from a pass by O’Kenie Fraser after twenty minutes, but Jermin Denard delivered the dagger on the stroke of full time rifling in a fierce right-footer to close the deal.
