A Brazilian national was released on $100,000 bail yesterday after she was charged with taking excess
money out of the country.
The police are alleging that on December 4, 2014, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, Marisa Silva Cardoza, was carrying US$11,000, out of Guyana and failed to declare the money to an Immigration Officer.
Persons are only allowed to travel with less than US$10,000.
Cardoza, a housewife of Ituni Street, Bel Air Park, pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to her by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Attorney Mark Waldron asked the Magistrate to place his client on her own recognizance because she has a strong defence. The lawyer added that the money is currently in the custody of the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU).
The SOCU is dedicated to investigating suspected financial transactions suggestive of money laundering and financing of terrorism.
However, the prosecutor objected to the defendant being released on self bail. The prosecutor asked that bail be granted in a substantial amount.
The matter will be called again on April 23.
