DEAR EDITOR,
Today, I sat in the middle of a field, and a beautiful scenario followed. I watched a butterfly taking to the sky, in what appeared to be its first time. This was a very intuitive moment, because I actually tried to recall the little knowledge I have on metamorphosis. But what followed after was what made me write this article.
Instead of thinking of the beautiful creature in front of me, my thoughts roamed back home, to my beloved Guyana. The state of affairs has closely followed an insect’s metamorphosis, especially for the ruling administration. Don’t believe me? Allow me to briefly explain the main phases of the process and you, yourself, will see how the PPP/C has literally undergone a metamorphic moment in history.
The complete metamorphosis of a moth or butterfly is a beautiful natural phenomenon. From the egg, the larva or the caterpillar emerges, whose main objective is to eat. In fact, they eat their own egg shells. Then, as other insects, the caterpillar faces a great challenge, they begin to outgrow their skin, literally. As a result, the caterpillar sheds it skin, a process known as molting. This process continues a few other times, until the pupa. This is the important transition from the ‘scary’ caterpillar into a beautiful moth or butterfly.
If the situation is not clear as yet for you, I would be very happy to explain. Remember the caterpillar? He just eats, and eats, exactly like the ruling regime, they are getting fatter and continuing to get too big for their skins. But before I get so far, what about the egg? Or what about the butterfly/moth that laid that egg?
In this story, I like to think of the parent as Cheddi, with his ideals and care. He would have hoped for his offspring to exhibit their true colours in full bloom. Indeed, the PPP/C has done just that, and if it is not clear for the wide populace to see, they are living in a lonely place.
Now back to the lifecycle. What happened after all that eating? The PPP/C has evolved into its “pupa” stage. For me, personally, I like to think of this as of the year 2006. Back then, one couldn’t really say what these people had in mind for this beautiful, yet sad country.
All that is the past anyway, but now, a few days ago, in front of my eyes, I witnessed the true change. The emergence of the beautiful and expressive butterfly. The true colours of the PPP/C are clear for all to see. This butterfly is power-drunk, scared, and would do anything to stay on top. But by doing this, he forgets about the main responsibility. He forgets to pollinate the fields, hence people begin to starve. How does this story end?
The ending of this story, I would leave up to you, you need to decide whether you will be fooled by this colourful butterfly?
In essence, I believe in a democratic process. You fail, you should see the door. Simple. You have been failing the people too long, and your desperate tactics are becoming sad. The announcement of that nomination list, has truly shown how scared the PPP/C is of losing any power, so scared, they will try and get their children into the act. How sad is that? How widely has the PPP/C actually looked for the best people for the job? That list looks more like a wedding invite list than a nomination list.
Be aware, be informed, be proactive, and weigh your options. The time to be scared of the past, or intimidated by it is long gone. This butterfly can easily fool you, and if it gets back power, the country would drag along, as it has for the past decade. To the end, the PPP/C will eat and take from you (the caterpillar) and then pose as a helper (the butterfly). You decide, whether you still want to be in a parasitic relationship, hoping for some assistance in the end.
