The murder trial of one time fugitive from justice, Abdulssalam Azimullah, also called ‘Sato’, 31, of Lot 183 Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice and Nigg Squatting area, began on Monday before Justice Franklyn Holder and a mixed jury in the Berbice High Court.
Azimullah is on trial for the murder of Gary Simon, also called ‘Fat Bull’ and ‘Bull’, which occurred on December 18, 2004.
After the jury was empanelled, State Prosecutor Attorney-at-law Natasha Backer read the indictment after which an adjournment was taken until Wednesday when the trial is expected to begin. The accused is being represented by Attorney at law Kim Kyte-John.
Azimullah was among three men who were initially charged with manslaughter. After a Preliminary inquiry was conducted at the Albion Magistrate’s Court, they were committed to stand trial for manslaughter in the High Court and granted bail. The DPP subsequently reviewed the case and ordered that the men be committed for murder.
However, by that time Azimullah could not be found. His two accomplices were subsequently tried and had the charges against them dismissed after no case submission were made.
The duo was immediately ordered rearrested and went through a second Preliminary Inquiry. The matter was subsequently discharged.
In the meanwhile Azimullah was on the run and was not caught until June 2012 and committed to stand trial in the High Court.
