After deciding that he no longer wanted to waste the court’s time, Aldren Adonis, changed his plea to guilty yesterday before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Adonis first appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore, on April 9, last and pleaded not guilty to the offences which stated that he had a gun along with ammunition in his possession without being the holder of a firearm licence.
He pleaded with Magistrate Judy Latchman to impose a light sentence on him.
Adonis, 35 a security guard of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was given a 48-month jail sentence and fined $70,000, after he admitted to the court that he had one 9mm pistol in his possession on April 6, last, at Campbellville.
Further, he confessed that he had five rounds of live ammunition in his possession on the day in question, at the same location.
According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, around 19:00hrs on April 6, last, the police were on patrol duty in the area when they received certain information.
As a result, they proceeded to Lot 164 Campbellville, Housing Scheme.
Upon seeing the police, the defendant ran away with the firearm in his left hand. He was eventually caught by the police and taken to the Prashad Nagar police outpost, where he was arrested and charged.
At the outpost the defendant admitted that the gun and ammunition were his.
Adonis provided the officers with a written statement from which the prosecutor read in court. “…I borrowed the gun from a boy called ‘Police’ in January and I went in the bush with the gun.
“Today (April 6) I was hangin’ with friends and I rest the gun in a stash. I later went and collect the gun, then I see the police coming and I run with the gun. The police run behind meh and ketch meh with the gun and bring meh to the station.”
Before sentencing Magistrate Judy Latchman asked the defendant if he had anything to say. The defendant replied, “no”.
The magistrate considered the fact that the defendant did not waste the court’s time and the seriousness and penalty attached to the offences.
Adonis was given a 48-month jail term on the gun possession charge and another 48-month sentence on the ammunition charge. The sentences will run concurrently.
