A Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) driver appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine -Beharry yesterday, on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving. He was placed on $250,000 bail.
Clyde Barker, 32, of 244 Second Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, denied the allegation which stated that on April 10, at Friendship, he drove a motor lorry in a dangerous manner to the public, causing the death of Ezekiel Murray.
Police Corporal Bharrat Mangru told the court that on the day in question at around 18:00hrs, the deceased was walking along Friendship Public Road. As he was about to cross the road, he was struck by the motor lorry.
Subsequently, he was taken to the hospital in an unconscious state; he later succumbed to his injuries.
Attorney Sonia Parag, asked the Magistrate to release her client on reasonable bail because he has no pending or previous matters, and has never been convicted by a court. The lawyer added that her client is not a flight risk, since he has a fixed place of abode at the aforementioned address.
Barker was instructed to report to the Officer in Charge of the Traffic Department, at the Grove Police Station, every Friday at 17:00hrs.
The matter will be called again on April 17.
Ezekiel Murray, 12 also called ‘Sonny’ of Lot 34 Friendship, Public Road, died Friday last, after the truck slammed into him, killing him instantly. The lad’s mangled body sustained several visible injuries.
