Ashmead Nedd captured 5-50 from 21 impressive overs of Left-arm spin yesterday for the National Under-17 team against Essequibo Under-19s in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Raj Singh Insurance sponsored three-day Inter-County U-19 cricket tournament at DCC ground in Queenstown in the City.
Nedd, the 14-year-old son of former Guyana First-Class off-spinner Gavin Nedd who was controversially sacked as the U-17s Coach for yesterday’s game, recovered from an ordinary start to grab his first five-wicket haul at this level to help dismiss Essequibo for 262 although Skipper Kemo Paul (47), Parmesh Parsaton (42) and Nathan Persaud (37) provided the lads from Cinderella County with a solid start before their tail wagged nicely.
The national U-17s were 34-1 after losing Baskar Yadram (7) at 24-1 to finish the day 229 runs away from first innings points on a track with some pace but one which was very good for batting.
Essequibo won the toss and opted to bat first in sunny conditions which became increasingly overcast as the match progressed and were off to a confident start as Parsaton and Nathan Persaud playing an array of sweetly times shots in a well compiled 78-run opening stand.
Parsaton, who stroked seven boundaries in his 54-ball 42, was the more aggressive of the openers before pacer Timothy McCalmont struck after 75 minutes of play by removing Parsaton, just when he seemed set for a fifty.
Paul who returned from the West Indies U-19 training camp on Saturday joined Persaud and oozed confidence for the start of his innings. The right-handed all-rounder who has already played for Guyana in U-19 cricket and Essequibo at the senior level, cut McCalmont delightfully behind point for four before caressing him majestically through cover for another boundary in the same over.
However, Nedd, who on Thursday hit his maiden double century in the GCA’s Under-15 final, broke the second wicket partnership just when it was starting to look dangerous, by removing Persaud at 91-2.
By Lunch Paul and David Williams had taken their team to 117-2 before Williams (4) was trapped LBW to off-spinner Richie Looknauth at 118-3 just after the interval. Paul, who hammered six fours and a disdainful six, was beaten by Nedd, who had settled into a nice rhythm and was stumped to leave Essequibo on 139-4.
But big scores are achieved through consistent partnerships and Sachin Persaud (21) and Travis Drakes (11) carried Essequibo to 163 before Nedd struck again when he had Drakes LBW while off-spinner Sagar Hethathiramani bowled Persaud four runs later as the team from Guyana’s largest but least populated County, slipped to 167-6.
Keanu Harry (20) and Akenie Adams revived the position with a fighting seventh wicket stand before Nedd trapped Harry LBW after Renaldo Mohamed had sent back Adams with two wickets tumbled for no run.
Looknauth Chinkoo (24) fell to Nedd at 242-9 before Neiland Cadogan, who clobbered sixes off of Nedd, Hethathiramani and Mohamed, whom he hit back over his head into a house over the Road to the Northern end of the small ground, flourished with a cameo 31 before Hethathiramani (2-22) bowled the left-hander to polish off the innings.
The Essequibo batsmen had to contend with a testing one hour period before the close and lost Yadram who had to content with several shots balls from Paul who charged in and bent his back.
But it was his new ball partner who was rewarded with Yadram’s wicket when he charged the bowler and edged a wide ball to the Keeper.
Raymond Perez (8) and Adrian Sukwah (5) were the not out batmen. Today is the second day and play is scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs.
