President of the North Essequibo Cricket Committee (NECC), Prince Holder and members of the North Essequibo Cricket fraternity yesterday staged a peaceful protest in front of the “House of Praise Assembly of God Church, in Queenstown on the Essequibo Coast, calling for the removal of Essequibo Cricket Board (ECB) Chief Selector, Otto Christiani who also serves in the capacity as a Pastor for that Church.
Holder is contending that Christiani has sidelined one of Essequibo’s young and promising cricketers, Siddiq Mohamed, who recently picked up ten wickets in six trail matches which was used to select the county’s team for the GCB U19 competition.
Prior to the Chief Selector sidelining Mohamed, Holder explained that Christiani told him that Mohamed captured four wickets in the matches; Holder however said that after he checked the scoring records, it was revealed that Mohamed copped ten wickets.
Holder is maintaining that Christiani’s judgment is biased and he continues to pressure the NECC because they have thrown their support towards the Government in relation to the Cricket Administrative Bill, unlike the other committees that are in support of the Guyana Cricket Board. He is calling on senior members of the Ministry of Sports to intervene swiftly.
The 17-year-old, Mohamed is a National Under-15 player and was the leading wicket taker in the trials. Mohamed also played for Essequibo in the Under-17 Inter County competition and was looking forward to the Under-19 tournament. “It’s a regular thing Christiani is doing.” Holder stated.
Mohamed is disappointed and had thought about quitting. His teammates have rated him to be at the top of his game, mentioning that he continues to do well, even at the senior level. Some of the placards read” Do not discriminate”, “Christiani is biased”, Christiani must go.”
The selector was not present for a comment regarding the unfortunate issue. (Yannason Duncan)
