Police may be able to boast soon that they have solved at least one of this year’s eight execution-style killings.
This follows the arrest of a man they claim was the mastermind behind the slaying of Guyana Geology and Mines engineer Trevor Abrams.
They have already detained two other men who were allegedly paid to kill Abrams, and the trio is expected to appear in court on murder charges this week.
Kaieteur News understands that the alleged mastermind, who is known as ‘Assassin’, was taken into custody last week. His alleged accomplices were implicated after being found with a .32 pistol, which ballistics tests showed was used to kill Abrams and Sterling Products Limited security guard Wilfred Stewart. One of the men is a former policeman and the other is an ex-soldier. They were also linked to a robbery at Mahaicony in which gunmen posing as policemen attacked the occupants of a truck at a bogus roadblock.
Abrams’ murder is believed to have been orchestrated by an individual who was upset over the loss of a mining concession. At the time of his death, the GGMC employee was stationed in the North West.
Abrams was riddled with bullets on February 26 by the occupants of a car while driving near Little Diamond, on the East Bank Demerara Public Road. Relatives and friends have repeatedly portrayed him as an individual of integrity. His mother had expressed doubt that his killers would have been apprehended.
But what is still unclear is why police are also questioning the brother of executed vendor Quincy Bowman about this case. Bowman was found on a bridge in Nutmeg Street, Festival City, on Easter Monday, with a bullet wound at the back of his head.
His brother was detained last Wednesday and was reportedly still in custody yesterday. Bowman had lived in French Guiana up to last December and only recently began vending in Georgetown.
Police have been at their wit’s end this year to solve a spate of brutal execution style killings. The victims include Patricia Sanasie, Airmax Vulcanizing Tyre Shop owner Randolph Singh, 19-year-old alleged gang-member Ryan Sooklall, Agricola shopkeeper Randy Persaud, political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing and 28-year-old Nabaclis, East Coast Demeara resident Dwayne Kennedy.
