DEAR EDITOR,
Politics is indeed interesting and, for those who may not be aware, it necessitates critical thinking and analyses. It also recognizes that not everyone would agree on everything, but disagreement and difference of opinion must follow a logical and reasoned path.
Politics in Guyana leaves much to be desired, especially from those who are either actively involved or have intentions of being involved in the governance of this lovely country.
Let’s look specifically at the youth. The election campaign of the two major players has decided to place a lot of emphasis on the participation of youth in this election. Emphasis on youth candidates and young voters are being catered to in a way that they have never been before. This must be commended. However, I am saddened that many of the young people that have been pushed to the forefront may not be ready for the scrutiny that may follow or ready to respond adequately to the questions posed by either journalists or the general public.
We cannot give a true figure as to the rate of unemployment in Guyana, but everyone can agree that it is much higher than anyone would like it to be. When speaking to young people all over Guyana, one of the first things they mention is that jobs are not available.
The majority of Guyanese that are overseas would tell you that they left because proper jobs were not available and secondly that the remuneration and working conditions in Guyana was also high on their reason for leaving. Given these facts, how can any sane person respond to the following question “Why then are so many young Guyanese claiming lack of opportunities and wasting away their youth?” (iNews, Friday April 10, 2015) by saying that “exploiting available opportunities are up to the youths themselves … opportunities are abundantly available”.
Who exactly is Olive Gopaul trying to convince, the team sitting beside her who all have jobs or promises of jobs because of their choice to support the PPP/C, or herself? She certainly will not be able to convince the majority of young people who have worked their hardest to do well at school only to end up working as a shop attendant or at a fast food restaurant because nothing else is available.
While it is true that one should be free to choose who they wish to support, please be reminded that many persons and even entire communities have been abandoned by this said government because they were viewed as opposition supporters. So please stop; the ‘I am innocent’ routine wouldn’t work here. And in closing I will leave this proverb “Show me your friends and I will tell you who you are.”
