Justice James Bovell-Drakes will sentence Plastic City resident, Michael Powley, later this month, for the
unlawful killing of neighbour; Visnauth Narine, called ‘Buddy’.
Powley’s impending sentence follows a unanimous guilty verdict for the manslaughter conviction, handed down by a 12- member mixed jury yesterday.
The jury deliberated for almost three hours on the case following a lengthy summing up by the trial judge. However, a probation report was ordered and the accused will be sentenced later this month.
Powley was involved in a squabble, which led to the death of his neighbour almost three years ago. The incident occurred on June 8, 2012 at Plastic City, West Coast Demerara.
Reports indicated that the duo lived next door to each other at Plastic City, but on the day of the incident, they were involved in a disagreement over a cooking gas cylinder. During the altercation, the victim sustained stab wounds in the region of his chest.
Following the confrontation, Narine was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital while the suspect fled the scene. The victim died while receiving medical attention. Powley, who was arrested and charged with the offence, faced a lengthy trial before Justice Bovell-Drakes and a mixed jury at the High Court in Georgetown. He pleaded not guilty to murder when the trial commenced.
State Prosecutors Natasha Backer and Narissa Leander called seven witnesses to the stand. The witnesses included Government Pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, and Police Lance Corporal, Denzil Frank.
Attorney-at- Law Basil Williams represented the accused. The matter was adjourned to April 27, next, pending the probation report.
