More than a month after 19-year-old Ryan Sooklall was riddled with bullets while at a shop in Parker Street,
Providence on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD), his alleged executioner, whose name has not been released by the police, has managed to stay one step ahead of the law.
The suspect had fled his Lot 41 Norton Street, Bagotstown, EBD, home with his wife and stepson after killing Sooklall, who was reportedly part of a gang in which he (suspect) was the leader.
Kaieteur News was told yesterday that the police, acting on information, checked a few houses in Bagotstown but failed to locate the suspect, who is known as “Lapsy.”
“A case is never closed, when we get information on a case; we immediately start working on it. With this case, we made a lot of checks but didn’t find this guy,” a police source said.
This newspaper was told that Sooklall and about 10 other youths were at the Lot 69 Parker Street, Providence shop when the killer struck.
One of the residents had told Kaieteur News that the youths were “just liming” in the yard when the suspect rode up on a bicycle and discharged several rounds at Sooklall before fleeing the scene.
Police believe that the now dead man had signed his own death warrant after he, along with a group of boys, hurled two ‘channa bombs’ and fired over 20 shots at the home of the suspect on February 28, last, a day before Sooklall was killed.
When Kaieteur News made checks, the suspect’s house was shut tight and at least ten bullet impressions were observed on the outer wall of the eastern bedroom.
Several of the bedroom window panes were shattered.
Neighbours had said that the gunfire had roused them from their sleep.
They claimed that the men opened fire on the couple’s bedroom and that angered the alleged killer.
Neighbours told Kaieteur News that later that day the suspect was heard angrily shouting, “I gun kill all of them!”
Residents surmised that he meant the gang who had turned up earlier while he was in bed.
This newspaper was told that the alleged gunman and victim were close friends who would normally “lime” in the area. No one could say what went wrong.
Sooklall was shot three times in the back and died at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
The shop where Sooklall was slain is said to be a popular meeting place for both killer and victim.
