A teenager with a passion for volunteerism is representing Guyana at the Young Americas
Forum of the Summit of the Americas in Panama City.
The Young Americas Forum concentrated on the challenge of cooperation in the Americas. The teen was nominated to represent Guyana through the Ministry of Youth and Culture’s Youth Volunteer Support Platform.
The Mocha, East Bank Demerara youth, Ja’asriel Bishop said that he has had a volunteer spirit since he was at the tender age of nine, running errands for those in his neighborhood.
Today, at age 19, he was selected by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, to be in Panama City and spoke on the many issues on the agenda at the Youth Summit.
The exuberant volunteer noted that he was more concerned with the issue of active citizenship in Guyana, citing the Voluntary School Club Project, which encourages schools to develop projects that benefit the community.
With new ideas he picked up at the Summit, Mr. Bishop wants to continue volunteering when he returns to Guyana.
“We’ve been working on issues that affect youth, policies, and implementation of policies that could solve those problems,” Bishop noted. “I spoke on youth and youth participation and how Guyana has implemented many projects through the Ministry of Culture, like the Volunteer School Club Project, which has the goal of promoting active citizenship.”
He said that topics selected for discussion included, education and security pertaining to Youths in the Americas.
“Lots of countries are affected by similar issues at a different level and they have different approaches of how they deal with those issues.
“We can learn from them and implement things that they would have done to solve their problems in our own Guyana,” Bishop suggested.
In addition, he noted that the “Vote Like A Boss” was also recognized during a discussion at the summit.
“So it was interesting to know that something Guyanese and youth from Guyana started could be recognized; it was very interesting and I had to share it,” Bishop proudly emphasized.
The “Vote Like A Boss” Campaign is geared towards encouraging youths to vote on May 11. Bishop plans to return to Guyana and share his recent knowledge and experience from Panama City.
