A spirited performance by Essequibo earned them a draw against host Demerara when
their opening round game of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers Inter-County U19 three-day tournament ended yesterday at Everest Cricket Club.
Chasing 216 in the final session, Essequibo ended the day on 71-3 after facing 18 overs with David Williams not out on 21 (2×4,1×6) and Travis Drakes unbeaten on 13. Pacer Sherfene Rutherford disturb the stumps of opener Satesh Latchana (02) with the score on eight, but Nathan Persaud and provided some entertainment with a stroke filled 33. Persaud skillfully drove both Basdeo and Rutherford down the ground for boundaries before he was bowled by left arm pacer Basdeo for 33 with seven fours at 50-2. Essequibo then lost Parmesh Parsotam (00) without addition to score, but David Williams and Drakes saw their team to stumps without further hiccups. Rutherford, Basdeo and Ashkaya Persaud had one wicket each.
Earlier, Demerara commenced their second innings with a lead of 35 and fast bowlers Neiland Cadogan and Jumal Hartman (1-11) put them under pressure with three early wickets. Cadogan had Ronaldo Renee caught for two before Hartman who hails from Wakenaam uprooted the stumps of Rutherford for a duck at 9-2. Cadogan then trapped Tevin Imlach (16) lbw, while Akshaya
Persaud was forced to retired hurt on one after he was struck on the knee by Hartman.
An Essequibo victory seemed in the making when off-spinner Looknauth Chimkoo removed Malcolm Hubbard for 18. After Vivian Albert retired hurt on one due to an ankle injury, Akshaya Persaud resumed his innings and along with Travis Persaud took their team out of danger with level-headed batting as they added 57 for the fifth wicket.
Travis Persaud who stroked five fours brought up his 50 off 117 balls before he was lbw to Akinie Adams for 51.
Left-arm spinner Keanu Harry who was later named man of the match and Chimkoo combined to reduce Demerara to 157-9 with the wickets of Ershad Alli (24), Albert (10), Basdeo (10) and Tariq Dharanlall (00). Ashkaya Persaud who remained unbeaten on 32 (3×4) and Carlton Jacques added 21 for the last wicket before Jacques went for 11 as Demerara were bowled out for 180 during the extended second session to take an overall lead of 215.
Chimkoo claimed 3-27 while Cadogan had 2-18, Akieni Adams 2-37 and Harry 2-57 to end with match figures of 9-123.
The second round will commence on April 12, with Demerara playing Berbice at Georgetown Cricket Club and Essequibo facing Guyana Under-17 at Demerara Cricket Club.
