A repeat offender was given a 24-month jail term by Magistrate Fabayo Azore, when he appeared on Wednesday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The court heard that on March 5, at High Street, Kingston, 43-year-old Michael Whyte of 177 Triumph, East Coast Demerara, robbed Volkou Vicheaser of one gold chain valued $100,000 and used of personal violence during, before or after the incident.
The defendant admitted to stealing the chain, but denied using personal violence.
The victim, who was taking pictures at the time of the incident, is said to be a Russian national.
Police Prosecutor Simone Payne stated that at around 11:15hrs, while the victim was taking photographs, Whyte approached him and snatched the chain from his neck.
Whyte then dealt the tourist several cuffs to the face causing him to fall to the ground. While attempting to escape, the defendant was caught by public spirited citizen. The police were summoned and he was taken to the Brickdam Police Station where he was arrested and charged.
When asked by the magistrate if he was ever convicted before, the defendant informed the court that he was only released from jail last month after serving a 30-month sentence for break and enter.
