GCB/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers 3-day U-19 Inter-County Tourney…
By Zaheer Mohamed
Despite a determined batting display by Essequibo, host Demerara’s
managed to grab first innings points when the second day of their opening round game of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Raj Singh Insurance Brokers Under-19 Inter-County three-day game ended yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club, Ground.
Chasing 261, Essequibo were bowled out for 226, ten minutes before the scheduled close to give Demerara a lead of 35.
The Essequibo batting were led by Parmesh Parsotam who hit a fluent half-century, Sachin Persaud with 46 and Nathan Persaud 31.
Resuming on one without loss, the visitors lost their first wicket on 19 when Satesh Latchana was needlessly run out for nine, but Nathan Persaud and Parsotam steadied the chase with a second wicket stand of 71 before Persaud was removed by Rutherford on the stroke of lunch.
Parsotam continued to time the ball well and brought up his half century which contained nine fours off 88 balls just after lunch. Essequibo then lost Parsotam and David Williams (10) in quick succession to be at 117-4. Parsotam faced 105 balls and hit ten fours.
The level-headed Sachin Persaud and skipper Travis Drakes survived some testing moments before a sharp shower sent the players off the field. Upon resumption, the duo batted courageously as they added 44 for the fifth wicket. But Malcolm Hubbard provided the host with the breakthrough when he had Drakes caught at mid on for 11. Ashkaya Persaud then trapped Keanu Harry (02) lbw to leave the score at 169-6.
However, Sachin Persaud played with a straight bat and rotated the strike well with Akieni Adams, but just after looking well set for a half century, he lost his stumps to Sherfene Rutherford who also knocked over Looknauth Chimkoo (00) with a leg cutter. Adams was then dismissed for 17 before Neilan Cadogan followed soon after for 13, leaving Jumal Hartman unbeaten on six.
Pacer Rutherford was the pick of the bowlers with 3-45, while Hubbard had 2-13 and left-arm spinner Akshaya Persaud 2-48. Play continues today.
